I want a GREEN home – sustainability, good design, green living spaces, outdoors in?

I live in Perth and am about to build at Gooseberry Hill. It’s a pole style home and I’m looking for some ideas to make it more energy efficient and to fit in with nature – to bring the outdoors in. Can you help me?

Mick and Joanne – Gooseberry Hill

Yes – I’d be delighted to help you. The “biophilic” design principals which means incorporating elements of nature into interior spaces and focusing on the connection with the natural environment is core to designing the interior and exterior of the home.

When the spaces flow, it becomes beautiful, simple, clean and elegant.  We will talk about sustainability in design and how far you want to go with creating a ‘green living space’.

I have a lot of experience with this and can provide you with suggestions based on your preferences, which we can discuss at the first consultation.

Who do you work with? Which Perth Suburbs do you service?

I’ve never hired an interior designer before, but my friends have recommended you. I’m not sure if you can help me. Who do you normally work with and which suburbs do you work in?

Janessa – Subiaco

My clients are typically very busy professionals who would like to get their home to match their lifestyle and look, but are not sure how to do it, or are time poor. I can look after all the details to ensure your project meets your requirements, to the highest quality.

I have many clients across different suburbs in Perth from riverside (Applecross, Mount Pleasant, Bicton, Ardross, Dalkeith, Como, Melville, etc) to Mandurah on the Canals, Northern Beaches and the Swan Valley. I am able to meet with you in person and via zoom.

Living Space – Making Dead Areas Functional and Beautiful ?

I have a home that’s mostly 90% good, but we have this section in the middle of our home between the kitchen and front door that’s really wasted space. How do I turn this dead space into more storage or something interesting, without structural work?

Jonathon – Halls Head

Often designing in dead spaces is re-imaging the area and what it can be used for. As a fresh set of eyes on your home, I can advise you on 2-3 alternate uses or adjustments to the area to make it more engaging, useful and beautiful.

Sometimes a little structural work maybe required, other times it’s very minor by incorporating furniture, cosmetic changes that tell a story and turn this unused space into a place of joy and happiness.

Entry and Living Area – Make a small space work better?

My home is a 1930’s art-deco property, with interesting spaces! When you walk through the front door there is a little section we have that just doesn’t feel or look right. I want people to arrive at my home and get that wow factor when I open the door to greet them.

P.s. My work from home arrangement is a little confused.

Sometimes I fall asleep on the sofa and my computer is left on, but I have no idea how to make the space multi-functional. Can you help me?

Catherine – Mount Lawley

Front Door Wow Factor

Yes, absolutely! Together we’ll talk about what the “WOW” factor would look like and how it could be achieved. We would also include looking outside the front door, what is the first impression visitors will have?

I’ll provide you with interior design ideas that incorporate, touch, sound, smell, visuals, and the environment as soon as your visitor arrives. Turning small spaces into workable living areas.

Multi-Purpose Living Spaces

Let’s talk about your living area. Many people are spending time working from home, or logging into their computer at night while watching tv or making dinner. Having a space to do this without cluttering up your home is important.

Whether the issue is making this living space compatible for multiple uses or reworking the space to make it flow better, I will bring ideas that add value to your home.

Bathroom Design – For Families and Busy Professionals

When I travel, I stay at particular branded hotels because I always get a better sleep and feel refreshed. One of the things I really love about the places I stay are the bathrooms. They’re spacious, airy, lots of natural light and have a classic look about them.

We currently have an ensuite and it doesn’t make me feel great. I want to transform it into a oasis, a place I can come, bathe and drink wine while I watch the sunset. I’m ready for a full bathroom renovation, but I need your help with the layout, design, selection of tiles and cabinetry.

I’m also thinking we should change the windows.  My wife wants a luxurious bathtub (that’s her one non-negotiable). Can you help me?

John and Deb – Applecross

Yes, this sounds like a really interesting project. Depending on the adjoining room, I will work a design that incorporates your favourite features from the big items like bath tubs, to the tiniest details like plugs, drains, and even lighting. Everything will be considered to give you the oasis you’ve been dreaming about.

House Styling – Fixtures, Fittings, Furniture, Colour, Styling Selections

Help me please Neve!! We built our dream house in Burns Beach. It looks amazing. But it’s empty. My parents are coming from the UK and they’re going to be expecting a luxurious retreat as they have invested 50/50 into this property with us.

We need help with the fixtures, fittings, furniture, colour, styling selections.

We need you to help turn this empty house into a warm and inviting place to stay.

Georgia – Burns Beach

This sounds amazing Georgia and wow, what an exciting time for your family. I’d be delighted to help you with making it a home. Schedule a call and we can meet onsite at your property.

You’ll need to provide a copy of the floor plan and any specific requirements via email prior to our meeting and then we can work through the list of priorities, timing and budget. I can purchase on your behalf or provide you with a specific shopping list, with colour mood boards and samples to use.

Do you offer interior designer services to new apartment complexes?

I’ve just bought an apartment off the plan through a developer in South Perth. I’d like to get some professional help with choosing fixtures, fittings, colours and cabinetry. Would you be able to help me?

Elizabeth – South Perth

Yes, I can help you. Developers will have a selection of fixtures and fittings as part of your building contract. We can start looking at that first and then make a decision which items you want to choose, or which items you change post construction.

There’s a lot to talk about, schedule a complimentary consultation. The design package I can offer you may include any of the following items to your requirements:

  • Colour selections
  • Finishing touches
  • Cabinetry
  • Tapware
  • Lighting
  • Furnishings

Why Hire a Professional Interior Designer

When it comes to transforming your space, hiring a professional interior designer can make all the difference. Interior designers have the expertise and knowledge to bring your vision to life while considering factors such as functionality, aesthetics, and budget.

They have an eye for detail and a deep understanding of design principles, ensuring that every element in your space is carefully curated.

A professional interior designer can save you time and money by avoiding costly mistakes and ensuring that your project stays within budget. They have access to a wide network of suppliers and contractors, allowing them to source high-quality materials and skilled professionals to execute their vision.

By hiring an interior designer, you can be confident that your space will be transformed into a beautiful and functional masterpiece.

Factors to Consider When Choosing an Interior Designer

Before embarking on your interior design journey, it’s important to consider a few key factors when choosing an interior designer.

  1. Firstly, take a look at their portfolio and previous projects. This will give you an idea of their style and whether it aligns with your own taste and preferences. Pay attention to the diversity of their work and whether they have experience in the type of project you have in mind.
  2. Secondly, consider their reputation and client testimonials. Look for interior designers who have a track record of delivering exceptional results and who have received positive feedback from their clients. This will give you confidence in their ability to bring your vision to life.
  3. Lastly, consider your budget and the interior designer’s pricing structure. While it’s important not to compromise on quality, it’s essential to find a designer who can work within your budget. Be clear about your budget from the outset and discuss it openly with potential designers to ensure that there are no surprises down the line.

Here are some tips for transforming your space:

  1. Plan and prioritize: Before diving into your project, take the time to plan and prioritize your design goals. Identify the key areas that require attention and allocate your budget accordingly. This will ensure that you make the most of your available resources.
  1. DIY where possible: If you have the time and skills, consider taking on some DIY projects to save on labor costs. Simple tasks such as painting walls or assembling furniture can be done yourself with a little research and effort.
  1. Shop smart: Look for deals and discounts when purchasing furniture and decor items. Consider shopping at thrift stores or online marketplaces for unique and affordable pieces. Don’t be afraid to mix high-end items with budget-friendly alternatives to create a curated and personalized look.
  1. Repurpose and upcycle: Instead of buying new furniture, consider repurposing or upcycling existing pieces. A fresh coat of paint or new upholstery can breathe new life into old furniture and give it a whole new look.
  1. Focus on key statement pieces: Rather than trying to revamp your entire space, focus on key statement pieces that will make a big impact. This could be a bold piece of artwork, a unique light fixture, or a statement piece of furniture. By investing in a few standout items, you can elevate the overall look and feel of your space.

How to Work Effectively with an Interior Designer

Collaborating with an interior designer can be an exciting and rewarding experience. To ensure a smooth and successful partnership, here are some tips for working effectively with an interior designer:

  1. Clearly communicate your vision: Take the time to articulate your vision and share it with your designer. Provide them with as much information as possible about your style preferences, functional requirements, and any specific ideas or inspirations you may have. The more your designer understands your vision, the better they can bring it to life.
  1. Be open to suggestions: While it’s important to communicate your vision, it’s also essential to be open to your designer’s suggestions and ideas. Remember that they are the experts and have a wealth of knowledge and experience. Be willing to trust their judgment and consider their recommendations.
  1. Set a realistic budget: Discuss your budget openly and honestly with your designer from the beginning. This will allow them to tailor their design recommendations and sourcing to align with your financial constraints. A clear understanding of your budget will also help manage expectations and avoid any surprises along the way.
  1. Provide feedback and be responsive: Throughout the design process, provide feedback to your designer and be responsive to their queries and requests. This will ensure that the project stays on track and that any necessary adjustments can be made in a timely manner.

Interior Design Trends in Perth

Like any other design field, interior design is constantly evolving, and Perth is no exception. Here are some of the current interior design trends in Perth:

  1. Biophilic design: There is a growing emphasis on incorporating elements of nature into interior spaces. Biophilic design focuses on creating connections with the natural environment through the use of natural materials, greenery, and ample natural light.
  1. Minimalism: Clean lines, neutral color palettes, and a clutter-free aesthetic have become popular in Perth. Minimalism allows spaces to feel open, airy, and calming.
  1. Sustainable design: With a growing awareness of environmental issues, sustainable design practices are gaining popularity. From using eco-friendly materials to energy-efficient lighting, there is a focus on creating spaces that are both beautiful and environmentally responsible.
  1. Mixed materials and textures: Combining different materials and textures adds visual interest and depth to a space. Mixing materials such as wood, metal, and concrete creates a dynamic and layered look.

Resources for Finding Inspiration for Your Interior Design Project

If you’re feeling inspired and ready to embark on your own interior design project, there are plenty of resources available to help you find inspiration. Here are a few suggestions:

  1. Online platforms: Websites such as Pinterest, Houzz, and Instagram are treasure troves of interior design inspiration. Create mood boards, save images, and follow designers and influencers whose style resonates with you.
  1. Magazines and books: Traditional print media still holds a lot of value when it comes to finding design inspiration. Subscribe to interior design magazines or browse through design books to discover new ideas and trends.
  1. Visit showrooms and galleries: Take the time to visit local showrooms and galleries to see the work of talented designers up close. This will give you a better sense of different styles, materials, and finishes.
  1. Consult with an interior designer: If you’re feeling overwhelmed or unsure where to start, consider consulting with an interior designer for a design consultation. They can provide you with expert advice, help you refine your vision, and guide you in the right direction.

Where good design fits your needs effortlessly.

Good design is actually harder to notice than poor design, in part because good designs fit our needs so well the design is invisible.
